What Does GSM Mean in Clothing?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much a fabric weighs over one square metre and is a useful way to understand how light, substantial or structured a garment may feel.
GSM does not tell you everything about quality, but it helps explain one important part of how clothing behaves. At HUMBLE ORIGINAL, we use different fabric weights across T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and shorts because each weight creates a different feel and purpose.
What does GSM mean?
A fabric listed as 180 GSM weighs 180 grams per square metre. A 350 GSM fabric weighs 350 grams per square metre. In general, a higher GSM means more fabric weight and a more substantial feel, while a lower GSM tends to feel lighter.
That does not automatically mean heavier is better. The right GSM depends on the garment, the fit, the fibre composition, the construction and how you want to wear it.

Is higher GSM better?
No. GSM describes fabric weight, not overall garment quality. A well-made 180 GSM T-shirt can be the right choice for someone who prefers a lighter everyday layer, while a 240 GSM T-shirt may suit someone who wants more structure and weight.
The same applies to hoodies. A 280 GSM hoodie is easier to layer, while a 350 GSM hoodie feels heavier and more substantial. Material composition, construction, finishing and fit are just as important as GSM.
What GSM is good for a T-shirt?

Different garments need different balances of weight, comfort, structure and movement. A T-shirt designed for easy layering does not need to feel the same as a heavyweight hoodie or 400 GSM pair of shorts.
